As one of the most influential and important electronic bands of recent times, Air have a sound so unique and timeless that it tends to transcend genres and age groups. Having never toured Australia in the past, the news that they would be performing a MySpace Secret Show was received with much anticipation. Upon release of the bulletin revealing the secret location that wristbands would be distributed, Air fans quickly descended upon Red Eye Records from various camped-out locations across the CBD, in a manner that resembled a scene from The Great Race. The iconic Sydney Opera House played host to what was certainly one of the most spectacular and beautiful displays of light and sound one could imagine, and with such an intimate setting, everyone in the audience had the best seat in the house (plus, as Air fans, they all seemed to have great shoes.) Heavy washes of synthesiser combined with their signature ambient sound and tripped out vocoder lyrics had everyone in a dreamlike state, creating an atmosphere that was so unparalleled, it is difficult to describe if you weren’t fortunate enough to be there. Relaxed, charming and undeniably cool, Air clearly enjoyed playing to such an intimate and adoring audience. Highlights included a gorgeous instrumental rendition of ‘Playground Love’ and the stunning single ‘Mer Du Japon’ from the new album, in which the back drop of the stage was lit up by thousands of tiny lights that changed in unison with the music. They played a number of songs from Moon Safari, which was fitting as it is the 10th anniversary of the debut album that saw them rise to such success. JB told the crowd "it was time to get sexy" before they played the single that brought Air to the attention of the world, "Sexy Boy." A handful of extremely lucky MySpace users were also given the opportunity of meeting the band after the show and expressing their thanks in person, certainly an experience that won’t be forgotten. Thank you to everyone who came along (especially the dedicated fan that flew all the way from Townsville for one night to see the show, only to head back on a 6am flight the next morning to complete an uni exam…we’re glad you got a wristband too!). A Special thanks to Craig May, Julian Hooper, Sasha from Michael Coppel Presents, and the staff at Red Eye Records for making the magic happen. Remember to stay tuned to MySpace Secret Shows for details of the next show. It will feature one of the bands is listed below in our top friends list – so leave a comment, get your voice heard and let us know who you’d like to see for FREE! |
