Each year, L’Oreal Paris designs a new collection of makeup for spring. This season, they’ve drawn on the movie star glamour of Europe in the 1960s, for their collection entitled Angelic. This week our designers challenge is to create an individual piece that won’t only work in and of itself, but will also work as part of this themed spring collection. Can these individual aesthetics pull together and work as a team?
With only one hour to discuss their ideas, the group came up with a Roman Holiday themed collection, with each piece part of a lux lady’s European vacation. The team had a collective budget of $1,000 to buy their material – but only three designers would be allowed to buy the materials!
Helen, Mark and Petrova went shopping, which proved disastrous for Juli. Unable to find the silk satin and silk chiffon she asked for, Mark decided on a pink polyester, which wasn’t what she was looking for at all! Meanwhile Lui wasn’t up to scratch on his knowledge of the 60s – would he be able to hit the brief?
Day two saw Leigh’s birthday and some surprise news – L’Oreal Paris were throwing the designers a party! Celebrity reporter Sophie Faulkner would be there and the designer she was most impressed with would receive valuable press coverage in Sydney’s Confidential, and immunity on the catwalk! Everyone had their schmoozing shoes on, but it was Brent who emerged as Sophie’s choice.
Then time to glow and go! With guest judge Karen Webster to help adjudicate, Lui walked away the winner, with his graceful interpretation of 60s romance and glamour. Leigh, Helen, Mark and Juli were declared safe, despite Juli’s model having some catwalk dramas involving ill-fitting shoes! That meant this week we farewell Petrova.
| Celluloid Dreams…. We asked the remaining designers about their cinematic aspirations – if they had a chance to style a film, what would it be like? | |
| Juli: | I would love to do a film set in Paris. The women in Paris are very chic, so it would be a challenge for me to design a whole look for a French actress. I loved the recent film Priceless, the clothes were divine and Audrey Tautou would be a wonderful, inspiring muse. |
| Lui: | Something related to the future. |
| Leigh: | A blockbuster musical, directed by Baz Luhrmann, staring Cate Blanchet, Kylie and Magda Szubanski who are all my grooms-maids when I marry James McAvoy in a hilarious all-singing, all-dancing romp with lots of sparkle (but not tacky - just a Scottish boy standing in front of a Aussie boy, asking him to love him). |
| Brent: | Endless Summer and boardshorts. |
| Helen: | I’d love to do Priscilla, because of the extravagant costumes, and over-the-top make-up and personalities. A lot of my friends are gay guys who have a very funny sense of humour. Priscilla just epitomizes my ethos on life as well. |
| Petrova: | A teenage makeover movie, directed by Michel Gondry that’s a cross between Funny Face, Dirty Dancing and Clueless. It’d feature elaborate dance routines and bright costumes. Zooey Deschanel would play the female lead, and Gael Garcia Bunel would be the male lead, and it’d also star Charlotte Gainsborg and of course Sophie Spalding, playing herself. Mine would be a pretty trippy film! |

| Question: | Congratulations on winning the fifth challenge! What did winning this challenge mean to you? |
| Answer: | A lot! I can be able to show what sort of designer I am. |
| Question: | Describe the most challenging moment so far on the show. |
| Answer: | Having to stay calm in front of the camera and the minimum amount of time for each garment. |
| Question: | Name your top five current inspirations, and why they get your creative juices flowing. |
| Answer: | Maison Martin Margiela; Hussein Chalayan; Junya Watanabe; Ann Demeulemeester; Heidemarie Jiline Sander (Jil Sander). They push boundaries, and deconstruct and redefine the value of clothing. |
| Question: | How is the whole experience different to your initial expectations of being on a TV show? |
| Answer: | It’s not easy as I thought it would be. It is so much more intense to be involved, rather than just watching. I didn’t expect to have so many cameras in front of you at the same time. |
| Question: | What’s your advice for young designers hoping to make it in fashion? |
| Answer: | “C & S”. Courage: to help you to start. Strength: to help you to continue when some people are being so negative about the whole thing |
| Question: | Looking forward, who do you see your biggest competition on the show? |
| Answer: | All of the remaining ones! |
