The final challenge to decide the Top Three had everyone on edge

but when it was revealed the challenge would be to create a show-stopping wedding dress, worthy of closing a Parisian collection, our designers could barely contain their excitement! With a total of twenty hours to create their gown, and $500 to buy their fabrics, it was all systems go!

Juli chose a peach silk chiffon and milk satin for her sophisticated, ambitious dress while Petrova focused on creating a big Elizabethan frilled collar to create movie star glamour and sexiness. Leigh was in his element as he began work on a more traditional gown with a huge skirt and tiny corset, but Lui was less confident with the brief, preferring a quiet symphony to making a big noise. Would his lack of drama lead to a dramatic exit?

Day two, and with ten hours left, Henry had a surprise for the busy designers – they would also have to design a bridesmaid’s dress that complemented their wedding gown design! Panicked and delusional, the designers set about completing the unexpected and demanding challenge.

Day three was runway day, and as renowned hair stylist Joh Bailey completed the lovely models’ looks, it was soon showtime. Fashion journalist Melissa Hoyer joined the judging panel, who adored Leigh’s exceptional, regal gown, crowning him the winner of the challenge. Juli’s dress was similarly approved of, with every detail atypically perfect.

There was concern, however, for Lui’s lack of flare - the panel felt his lack of experience attending actual weddings showed. Petrova’s collar didn’t work as she planned, with the judges commenting it was dramatic, but slightly reptilian – the bride of Frankenstein perhaps? In the end it was the innovative and creative Lui who didn’t make the cut this week.

Goodbye Lui!

Question: n your opinion, how has bridal fashion evolved over the past few years?
Answer: Some of it isn’t as stitched up as it has been in the past, with more fluid, simple gowns really coming into play. But there is still a plethora of meringue-type dresses that would look better on the top of a cake than walking down the aisle.
Question How are Australian designers different to the rest of the world?
Answer Many Australian designers have a more global approach to design – I think they tend to look at the whole world as their inspiration and not get too parochial in their design. Some, though, tend to be influenced by the internationals too much, some blatantly knocking off what has already been shown.
Question Who is inspiring you right now?
Answer OS: Lanvin, Balenciaga and Marni; Locally: Easton Pearson, Woodford & Co, Bassike and Dinnigan.
Question What are some of current international trends we’ll be seeing here next season?
Answer More block and solid colors; a return to architectural shapes that don’t hug the body too much; shoes are still platform and getting higher
Question If Project Runway was being made in 2018, what difference would we see on the catwalk?
Answer If Project Runway was being made in 2018, what difference would we see on the catwalk?

As the competition heats up, we check in with our Top Three!

Question: Which outfit from another designer in the competition did you like the most?
Answer: Leigh:I LOVED Juli's floaty wedding dress, and Lui's 60's goddess was stunning!
Petrova: Leigh’s outfit for the first challenge, which I am hopefully wearing to the Races this year! I loved pretty much everything Lui made.
Juli: I loved Petrova’s dress she did in the first challenge, it was gorgeous.
Question: How confident were you you'd make Top Three?
Answer: Leigh: I hadn't even considered it; I entered the competition for the experience not the prize!
Petrova: When you enter into a competition like Project Runway you have to believe from the beginning that you are going to be in the Top Three.
Juli: When I arrived at the apartment, I met the other designers and I was sure that everyone else was better than me. I was so insecure, but I told myself that I just need to do what I am good at and I will get through.
Question: What has this show taught you about yourself?
Answer: Leigh: I need to relax, stop worrying about everything and believe in myself more!
Petrova: That everything happens for a reason! And even if you fail, you might just be given a second chance!
Juli: I am really patient, and really good at my finish of garments. I loved the show; it was constantly learning things about myself and the construction of garments from the other designers.
