Fresh off the heels of the Decemberists just having played in front of 17+K people at the epic Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles, with the LA Philharmonic, the band decided to do a complete 180 and play the exact opposite show at the Mohawk in Austin, TX. Keep in mind the Mohawk is only a 200 person capacity room a room so small Colin could have had a conversation with someone on the other end of the club to find out what song that person wanted to hear.
Which is essentially what the band did, the band entered the stage with no set list, determined to give the fans that were waiting in line for 10+ hrs in the HOT TX sun exactly what the came to hear.
The band played every hit imaginable from their vast catalogue old and new. July, July!, OValencia, Los Angeles, and more. The Decemberists played the songs almost as fast as the fans could yell them out, and then sing along. The club looked like a Jewish wedding reception with people dancing and clapping along, it was great. The Decemberists too the secret show to a new level until..the heat got to them. The band stopped playing and rushed outside….WHERE THEY PLAYED MORE SONGS!
The band was encircled in the patio with 500 + kids that didn't get in but stayed to hear the audio feed outside, and have a cool drink, and perhaps catch a glimpse of the show through the window of the club. It was like some weird campfire sing along in Austin with a stand up bass and an accordion. It really was one of those shows you will always remember and wish more bands did.
A Huge thank you to the Decemberists + Dawn, Capitol, the Mohawk, and all the kids who stood in line all day in ridiculous heat, I hoe it was worth it! And as Apu says, “thank you, come again”
