February was the one year anniversary
for the Secret Shows program on MySpace. Has it really been a year already?
Yeah I guess so, it seems just like yesterday I remember being nervous and
wondering if anyone would show up to the firs show I put on with Jenny Lewis
and the Elected (both members of Rilo Kiley). All I had to do was fill a
200 person room, and I was still nervous. Finally some relief came when I
arrived at the club 4 hours early to find over 400 kids in line wrapped around
the building, with some random kid handing out numbers and writing peoples
names down. This kid was doing my job already for me, and at that point I
knew I was on to something gold.
34 shows later (in the US, over 50 worldwide) it has been a year, a really really quick busy year of huge growth, not only for the company but myself as well. A barrage of shows all over the country, and the world. Secret shows is to date the most successful program to emerge from MySpace aside from being the goliath social networking/way of life it has carved out for itself in society. We have taken Secret shows to 6 different countries not including the US this year with behemoth acts like Oasis, Jet, Primal Scream, the Killers, James Blunt, Tenacious D, Gnarls Barkley, Ice Cube and so many more. Secret Shows has been the home for band’s debut performances, the unveiling of new music, record release shows, and so many more momentous events…and now it was time to celebrate.
The one year anniversary was a day to celebrate a year’s worth of hard work from all the people involved form the photographers, to the designers, to the sponsors, and the people who are at every show handing out posters and making sure everything goes off for the kids. I had a vision in my head of how I wanted it to go down. I wanted people to be able to see what I had seen over the year, to actually be able to walk through 34 shows all at once, and then enjoy the secret show performance for themselves….and so it was.
2/22 we had a gallery show in Hollywood CA, the home of the very first show of everyv single poster from every single U.S. show and I had each of the photographers who shot each show pick out the photos that they thought best represented each nights performance. If you looked at one set of photos and a poster by itself, it didn’t say much, except, “wow that would a been a cool show, I wish I was there.” But when you walked down the giant white gallery room and looked at the faces of all the kids from each show and the bands energetic performances, you really got a grasp of what the Secret Show program was all about, and that was the kids, and giving them a special experience that would be remembered for a lifetime.
The gallery show was a hit, people really walked through each show and read the little stories each person wrote about each experience and I felt like everyone got a little closer to the program.
Enough about the gallery, this is a Secret Show after all, and it is all about the show. The lineup was to consist of some of my favorite CD’s of the year. Clipse, Cold War Kids, and Band Of Horses. Band Of Horse unfortunately couldn’t make it at the last min, so Diamond Nights were kind enough to step in and take their place. The performances were outstanding from every band to say the least. We had over 1000 people come and go through the night. Some for the gallery and no show, some for the show and gallery, but we kept cramming the kids in as people left, it was a long great fun filled night. And the crowd was so into the whole event, it felt very rewarding.
So a big thank you to Chili’s, Dan and Micah, all those at MySpace who have helped, Jeremy Weiss, Aaron Farley and everyone who contributed over the last year, ESPECIALLY THE KIDS!!! Heres to another successful year!
