The muggy Miami mist set the perfect Halloween mood as fans lined up last weekend to see The Sounds in an exclusive MySpace Secret Show. As early as 3:00pm, MySpacers from all over South Florida showed up outside Miami’s Studio A, Corona’s in-hand and costumed as hippies, princesses, wild animals, maids, Peter Pans, Ghostbusters, and even as condom dispensers. Also floating in and out of the fog was a strange middle-aged man in a blue bathroom and pink hardhat, combing the crowd for spare change and insisting guests pay him $10 to park on the street….
Surprisingly, no one dressed as Borat, although the audience did find Waldo when costumed local favorites And Then There Was You took the stage and warmed up the MySpace crowd with some hard licks and serious Miami reverb.
The night proved to be far more satisfying for these fans than for those of the hometown heroes down the street, namely the Miami Heat, who were --in fitting with the spirit of Halloween— brutally murdered by the Chicago Bulls in a gruesome debacle not soon to be forgotten.
The costume masquerade at Studio A reached a fever pitch when The Sounds finally emerged from the ether. Cloaked in the forms of a Playboy bunny, a solider, and The Simpsons’ Disco Stu and C. Montgomery Burns, the Swedish new wavers drove their ghoulish crowd crazy with songs like “Painted By Numbers” and “Tony The Beat.” Whether human, demon, or “other,” not one foot (or hoof) stood flat on the floor as lead singer Maja Ivarsson, dressed as a sexy pilot, spellbound the crowd with her (black) magical energy and a voice that soared as well as enchanted. Miami found something Scandinavian to root for on Halloween. On that night, the Sounds were dunking all over Shaq.
Undying thanks to And Then There Was You for bringing the hometown noise, DJs Carmel and Mr. Pharmacist for the monster mashes, the Sounds for traveling from Europe to spend Halloween with MySpace, and of course to Chili’s for making all Secret Shows free!
