The sun was shining brightly down on Fog City around 11:00am, when MySpacers began lining up outside the Victorian era nightclub Café Du Nord, The once-notorious gin joint has since its founding in 1907 served the city of San Francisco as an underground speakeasy, a secret society clubhouse, a brothel, and, finally, as the host of +44 in a Secret Show exclusively for MySpace members!
When the Café’s tiny capacity of just 250 people was breached and the doors closed, it became quickly clear to fans that they were becoming part of a once-in-a-lifetime experience. The chance to see +44 in such an intimate setting is one that will likely never come again, so you can only imagine the crowd’s excitement when the band took the stage and launched into “Lycanthrope,” the opening track on their debut album, “When Your Heart Stops Beating.” Calling the record a “debut” is really an understatement, because as all +44 fans know, the group is composed of veterans from other great bands, and their skills as musicians were in full effect at this Secret Show. +44 showed off their talents with flawless, energetic performances of fan-favorite songs from the record, including “Cliffdiving” and a particularly rousing version of the title track, “When Your Heart Stops Beating.”
Not a group to let the holidays go unrecognized, +44 closed the show with an excellent cover of The Descendants’ “Christmas Vacation.” On his way off stage, singer/bassist Mark Hoppus reminded fans that the Secret Show was sponsored by Chili’s, and invited the crowd to meet him later for some baby-back ribs!
