If there’s one thing Secret Shows knows how to do, it’s turn an unsuspecting venue into a party and this time it was a full-fledged dance party! With a crowd of 700 plus people and ages ranging from 4-40 years old waiting outside the Soma in San Diego, some couldn’t wait for the party to begin and did their own acapella versions of hellogoodbye songs to get the night started and fight the cold weather. As echoes of “Oh, it is Love” were heard through the Soma parking lot, 500 lucky fans began to get let inside to pack the tiny Soma side stage room to catch hellogoodbye’s last US show before heading off to Japan and the UK.
First up was Self Against City, a Drive-Thru Records band from Sacramento, CA. It was just four days after the release of the band’s debut full-length album, “Telling Secrets To Strangers” and it became clear that the fans hadn’t wasted any time learning the words to every song when their set turned into a giant sing-along. In between sets the crowd really got moving when the “Cha Cha Slide” song began blasting through the speakers. It’s truly quite a sight to see 500 people “slide to the left, slide to the right” and then “turn it down.” Halfway through the song, Forrest from hellogoodbye took the stage to bust a quick freestyle rap and do a bit of the “Cha Cha” himself before the band broke into their set. The dancing continued through the rest of the night with the band playing new fan favorites “Here (in Your Arms)” and “All of Your Love” as well as classics like “Dear Jamie… Sincerely Me” (which Forest sang as “Dear Chili’s”) and “Jesse Buy Nothing… Go to Prom Anyways!”
