A lazy summer Saturday in July saw the return of MySpace Canada Secret Shows with performances by Tokyo Police Club and Ruby Coast at the Starlight in Waterloo, Ontario.

Fans braved the afternoon rain to line up early for a chance to see Tokyo Police Club play a rare club show. Tokyo Police Club’s EP A Lesson In Crime and new full-length, Elephant Shell have garnered much critical acclaim and has allowed them to headline tours and festivals around the world, all the while building up a loyal fan base. Also performing was rising stars Ruby Coast, who on the strength of an EP could be destined to follow in the path of the evening’s headliners.

By door time the weather had cleared and a line stretched down both sides of the street full of fans eagerly anticipating the now sold out show.

Just after 8pm Ruby Coast took to the stage and unleashed a short, but impacting set of upbeat pop songs that won over an unfamiliar audience, including standout album track “Laugh At Alice.” By the end of their set, their merch booth was swarmed with new fans eager to pick up a copy of their record and meet the band.

After a brief intermission, evening headliners Tokyo Police Club launched into a high energy set that had the entire singing and clapping along. Incorporating a stellar light show and a dancing robot into their set, they included new favourites “Tessellate” and “Your English Is Good” alongside old favourite “Nature of the Experiment” from 2006’s A Lesson In Crime allowing for an excellent mix of tracks. The night closed off with both bands on stage performing Tokyo Police Club’s “Be Good,” a great way to end the Secret Show.

Thank you to Tokyo Police Club, Ruby Coast, Josh, Bernard and the Starlight Staff, Steven Himmelfarb, Rich Cohen, Justin Erdman & Universal Music, Lauren Schrieber, David Waldman & Susan Pape for their help and hard work in making this Secret Show possible.
