This past Wednesday in San Francisco, though, we had to throw our expectations out the window when Phantom Planet and The Hush Sound played a truly surprising show at The Bottom Of The Hill. For The Hush Sound, this was one of their first shows in support of their new album, Goodbye Blues, and they played a good number of songs from it. Hell they even dedicated one of them to their new label mates Phantom Planet (who they will be sharing a stage with for the next few weeks on tour.)
Once the Hush Sound's set came to a close, the members of Phantom Planet began making their way toward the stage. With the release of their new album, Raise The Dead, just a few days away, the band drew heavily from it, churning out a rousing version of the album's title track as well as its first single, "Do The Panic." Then came the surprises. At a fan's request, the band played "The Galleria," an obscure B-side from a fan club only release.
The only problem? The song was so obscure that frontman Alex Greenwald couldn't remember the second verse of it! In turn, he invited the entire crowd to come up and sing the final song of the night with him and, soon, the stage at Bottom Of The Hill was so crowded, that bassist Sam Farrar had to play on the floor with the rest of the audience.
It was definitely a memorable way to end an otherwise incredible night and it wouldn't have been possible without the help of Phantom Planet, The Hush Sound, Fueled By Ramen and the staff at the Bottom Of The Hill. So thanks to all of them.
And, as always, we'll see you at the next show...
