When you really stop and think about it, The Talking Head might be the perfect place to have a Secret Show. After all, it's the kind of club that actually feels like a secret: It's located on a tiny street in downtown Baltimore that hardly any of the locals seem to know about. Then, to top it off, the second floor looks like a secret clubhouse, decorated with vintage video games and a worn in pool table. All and all, it was a great spot for indie rock upstarts Tokyo Police Club to play their first Secret Show.

The night started, suitingly enough, with fellow Canadians Meligrove Band, who have spent the past week touring up and down the East Coast with the Tokyo guys. As the floor at The Talking Head began filling up, the giddy alt-pop act began playing songs from their entire recorded output, including a few new tunes from their forthcoming album, which is due out later this year.

After a quick change, the members of Tokyo Police Club took the stage. Now, granted, all of our Secret Shows take place in extremely tiny venues like The Talking Head, but this show must have felt intimate, seeing that the band had just come from playing in front of millions of people on Late Night With David Letterman. The song they played on Dave's Set ("Tessellate") came early in their set, and was followed by a handful of tunes from their excellent new album, Elephant Shell.

From there, the band decided to reach a bit further back in their catalog, as they churned out a razor sharp version of 2006's "Shoulders & Arms"--which was particularly impressive, considering that frontman Dave Monks spent most of the previous two hours in the back of club, nursing his ailing throat with some tea. Of course, he did have some help: Near the end of their set, when Monks and his bandmates went into "Cheer It On," the entire crowd sang back ups and enthusiastically clapped along.

After they were through, the band headed back upstairs, where they signed autographs and hung out with a mob of sweat soaked fans. Of course, nights like this wouldn't be possible without those sweat soaked fans as well as bands like Tokyo Police Club. So thanks to them, as well as the folks at Saddle Creek, the staff at The Talking Head Club and, of course, the dude who ran the lights during Tokyo's set. Seriously, those things looked bad ass.

As always, we'll see you at the next show...
