When The Black Keys decided to play a MySpace Secret Show, there was only one club they had in mind: Cleveland's Beachland Tavern. It was the first place the Akron-bred band had ever played and now, with five albums in their arsenal, they decided to come home and make some more paint peel off the walls. It was all about giving back to the fans who have been with them since the beginning, and who weren't afraid to ditch school or work and stand outside for hours in the drizzling rain.

The excitement poured off of the sidewalk and into the room at around 8pm. The lucky crowd of 150 enjoyed someaward-winning deep-fried peanut butter and jelly sandwiches ($3), and shopping in the vintage clothing and record shop beneath the club ($6-30). Local band Black Girls gleefully hit the stage at 9. This show was just as much a secret to them, since they didn't know whothey were opening for until MySpace announced the show over the weekend (priceless).

At 10pm The Black Keys stepped onto the one-foot stage and invited the audience into drummer Patrick Carney's basement. The atmosphere was all there—a blue and white tiled floor, raw garage rock reeking from the 6-foot amps, furious drum beats bouncing off of the low ceilings, and the band's proud fathers smiling from the back of the room.

The set featured fan favorites from each of the band's albums. As Dan Auerbach growled the hook to the newest single, "Strange Times," the crowd sang along behind him. When the riff came in, Patrick started pounding on the kick like his foot was asleep, and the floor shook with excitement—a reminder that we were in fact above ground and not in the Carney family basement. The floor didn't stop shaking until the show was over.

This was a rewarding night for everyone in the room, and MySpace Secret Shows would like to thank them all. To the fans who have shown their love and dedication to the band since they released their first album, this will always be their band. To the rubber city duo, who tour the world with a ten-foot Goodyear tire for a backdrop and never stop appreciating their roots. To the Black Girls for warming it up, and to the Beachland crew for making it happen.

This MySpacer's homecoming was a proud one.
