It may have been the end of a long holiday weekend, but one thing was fore sure: The hundreds of DragonForce fans that showed up at this very special show in Seattle were not looking to laze around. In fact, after the British power metal band announced that they would be playing a Secret Show at El Corazon -- a tiny club located across from a freeway in downtown -- a whole slew of them showed up at 7:00 AM, just to make sure they got inside.
Then, once the faithful fans were shuttled in, the majority of them began chanting DragonForce’s name... for nearly half-an-hour. But their enthusiasm was understandable. After all, this was one of the few headlining shows DragonForce were set to play this summer -- they will spend most of the warmer months performing at arenas as part of the Mayhem Festival -- and, without question, they pulled out all of the stops.
Frontman ZP Theart struck just about every rock god pose you can think of and guitarist Herman Li somehow managed to shred through classic cuts like “Fury Of The Storm” and “Black Fire” while licking his fretboard. We also have to give huge props to keyboardist Vadim Pruzhanov, who played easily the best keytar solo we have heard all year.
Eventually, though, the sweatsoaked six-piece slowed things down considerably, as they launched into the lone ballad of the night. "This one is for all the ladies," singer Theart said, and a sly grin crossed his face. From there, though, Theart and his bandmates returned to the epic shredding they have become known for, stringing together a group of songs off 2006’s Inhuman Rampage, including their biggest hit "Through The Fire And Flames," which ended the show.
Now, we could probably go on and on about the over-the-top sing alongs, hairpin solos and incredible theatrics that went on at this particular Secret Show. But we think Threat put it best in the middle of the night when he declared, "Bloody hell, this is the shit." It was, and it wouldn’t have been possible without the help of Roadrunner Records, Mayhem Festival, the staff at El Corazon, and all the fans that showed up.
So thanks to them, as well as to DragonForce for putting on such an awe-inspiring show. Don't forget to pick up their new album, Ultra Beatdown, when it hit stores on August 23rd. We’ll see you at the next show!
