MySpace users ventured from six different states -- and showed up as early as five in the morning -- to witness Jason Mraz perform an intimate show in Hartford. They came equipped with parasols, camping chairs, SPF 30 and -- for some -- their parents. It was the ideal summer day to skip work or camp and, in the height of the heat, the hundreds of hardcore fans were blessed with a visit from the local ice cream man. Soon after the sun-soaked fans packed into the venue, their beloved troubadour took the stage in his signature fedora. (It was just like the one next to the gorilla in the poster, but black.) Jason was overwhelmingly rewarded with screams from an excited horde of teenagers. In their uncontrollable eruption, the crowd remained able to steadily hold up their cameras and cell phones, as they all watched Jason Mraz perform through 3-inch LCD screens. The hits came early, as "Wordplay" welcomed a sing-along from the crowd. The audience didn’t miss a word -- they even managed to yelp in excitement between lines and breaths. As Jason belted out the beginning of "Remedy" the crowd matched in volume, singing louder than before. Mraz then kicked out a cover of Oasis's "Wonderwall," just to make sure the crowd's pulse was still climbing. It was. There was applause. More screaming. Some squealing. And yes, the cameras were still in the air. For the next hour the crowd was graced with some more favorites, some new songs, along with the kind of vocal jazz/pop improvisation that only Mraz could pull off. In the end, what Jason Mraz called his hottest looking crowd so far this summer, was one of the most excited and energetic audiences MySpace Secret Shows has seen this year. A big thanks goes to Jason Mraz for giving his fans such a memorable night, the Webster Underground for hosting, the ice cream man for the Choco Taco, Acura for making sure this show was free and, of course, everyone who trekked to Hartford. Thanks to all of them and, per usual, we’ll see you at the next show. |
