If we were to publish a Secret Shows Book Of World Of Records, what exactly would you find inside? Well, for starters, you would probably find out what really was the longest line to form in front of a venue. Was it the one at the Gnarls Barkley show in New York? Or the Slayer gig in Salt Lake City? What about the earliest a fan has ever arrived for a show? Was it the two teenagers who got to the Motion City Soundtrack show a day before it started? You know, it probably was. Either way, we know exactly who to cite as the longest performance in Secret Show history. That honor, it turns out, goes to the members of Ween, who took the stage at this incredibly intimate performance in old town Fort Collins just after nine and didn't let up until nearly one in the morning. For those of you who failed math, that is roughly three-and-a-half hours worth of smirking alt-rock, making this one of the most memorable shows in recent Secret Show history. Perhaps the citizens of Fort Collins had a feeling that something like this was going to occur, seeing that hundreds of them showed up at Hodi's Half Note in the wee hours of the morning to ensure that they got a spot inside. Though most of them seemed satisfied with either kicking it in the shade or sucking down a cool beverage from one of the shops nearby, many of them actually brought instruments and jammed with the people they met in line. Then, a few hours later, they sweated all over them. Because it was, of course, ridiculously hot inside Hodi's, though very few seemed phased as Gene and Dean launched into "Nan" off of 1992's God. Ween. Satan. From there, the two of them and their crack band -- bassist Dave Dreiwitz, drummer Claude Coleman and keyboardist Glenn McClelland -- covered nearly every era in the band's catalog. There was "Piss Up A Rope" from their excellent 1996 album 12 Golden Country Greats, "Doctor Rock" from 1991's seminal release The Pod, and even a turn at "Your Party," the tongue-in-cheek closer from their latest album, La Cucaracha. Though things slowed down for an acoustic set in the middle, the seemingly inexhaustible act came back with not one, but two encores closing with... well, a song that we probably shouldn't relay the title of. But trust us, it was a great way to end an incredible performance and it wouldn't have been possible without Ween, their management team, their extended road crew, the folks at Rounder, the staff at Hodi's, and Mike Aho for the bad ass poster design. So thanks to all of them. As for us, we'll see you at the next show... |
