Did you know that Fugazi played at T.T. the Bear's? Well, they did. This was back in the late '80s, when the Washington DC-based four-piece were just starting out. On that fateful night some 20 years ago, the much beloved punk group got on stage, possibly took off their shirts, and proceeded to spend the next hour playing the kind of music that makes you think as much as it makes you feel. So why are we bringing this up now? Because, frankly, it's been a long time since a band as passionate and inspiring as Fugazi has taken the stage at T.T.'s. But all of that changed this past Tuesday when Rise Against shocked 250 of their diehard fans by turning up at T.T.'s for this incredible secret show. Now, not unlike Fugazi in the '80s, the guys in Rise Against decided to make this secret show a quasi-benefit, and asked their fans to bring a can of food for The Greater Boston Food Bank as part of their entry into the show. As fans began creeping into the venue, they deposited cans into huge plastic tubs, resulting in over 400 cans of food for a very worthy cause. In addition, many signed petitions and picked up the literature that Peta2 had on hand, much of it promoting their current campaign "Meat Is Not Green." Of course, they didn't have too much time to pour over the pamphlets. Once Rise hit the stage nearly everyone inside surged towards the front to sing along to the next hour's worth of songs, much of which spanned the band's near 10-year-career. Sure enough, this included a handful of songs off of Rise's excellent new album Appeal To Reason, which had just hit stores that day. The raised fists were held high during the band's current single "Re-Education (Through Labor)" as well as "Collapse (Post-Amerika)." As the band's rousing set began winding down, singer Tim McIlrath thanked, quite strangely, Sarah Palin and John McCain. He then added that he was showing his gratitude to them for "giving this band a reason to exist." (Guess you know who McIlrath will be voting for, eh?) From there, the Rise guys launched into a cover of "Minor Threat," one of the more famous songs by Fugazi leader Ian Mackaye's other band, Minor Threat. They then closed things out with a sweat-soaked version of "Prayer Of The Refugee." It was a perfect way to end what had to be one of the most inspiring Secret Shows we've had this year and we've got a whole lot of people to thank for making it happen. So then, much appreciation and respect goes out to the guys in Rise Against, their road crew, Missy Worth at Artistic Liscense, Victoria at Interscope, Corrie Christopher at The Agency Group, Steve Jennings, Peta2 and Randi at TT's. Thanks y'all. As for everyone else, we'll see you at the next show... |
